Into the Wild: NWT Edition
HIYA! So this is our 'Into the Wild' Yellowknife Edition! Just kidding!
We set out to Cameron Falls just East of YK.... which is probably a 30-40 foot waterfall. The waterfall doesn't completely freeze over however a thick ice layer freezes on top of the running water. Alright, lets make an equation here... you have a half frozen waterfall, rushing water at the bottom, nice sunny day, a crazy person along with a half-crazy person... you would have done it too... I know you're thinking it! Of course SLIDE DOWN THE WATERFALL and OF COURSE try drinking from the clean, cold, and rushing water at the bottom!
Ah! Such a great experience! As soon as I saw the water, my plan was to slide down the waterfall, lie flat on my stomach and slurp up the water flowing by. I had tried at a different location and my foot fell through the ice. It was sort of a close call, however I knew this could work. So then I found this ice...which looked a bit thicker... and it worked! The trick was to not SLIDE into the water as this ice shelf seemed to to be on a slight angle downwards.
See! This is the fun of living in the NWT: every step outside could be the next new adventure!
