Mississauga
When I looked out my window this morning, I saw the sun and blue skies. And then I saw a house that looked identical to the one I was sitting in. They call it a city. I call it a field full of brick boxes.
I've been here for 5 days and to be honest, so far, it sucks! 112 more days to go. Don't worry, I'm not ACTUALLY counting because I hope that things will get better ie. less lonely. I'll break this post into three mini sections: 1. the lunch room, 2. car, 3. friends.
1. the lunch room
The company I'm working for this term claims to have a very social atmosphere, although this is not true for the Mississauga office. So one of my coworkers came to my cubicle and told me that I should eat my lunch in the lunch room just to try and get to know other people around the office. Feeling desperate to talk to people and wanting to put effort into making friends, I grab my lunch and head to the lunch room. It's a kitchen with a big table. I walk in and there are 3 other people (people I've already met before) and they're all eating silently and reading the newspapers that are spread across the table. Yep... ZERO TALKING! So I was like "alright, guess I'll just sit right here and read a newspaper too and wait for someone to say something". Silence. Okay...guess I'll try again tomorrow. The next day I head back into the lunch room and guess what? They're STILL reading newspapers and NOT talking! These are people who've worked together for a long time and they still don't talk to each other. This is so weird to me! At least one of the guys there hadn't met me before and introduced himself. I will continue to eat my lunch in the lunch room and I'll update you on any big news! Gasp! Like, someone might look up from the Globe and Mail and say something to me...what a day that will be!
2. car
People told me that Mississauga was a driver city. And alas, they are right. I didnt want to believe it but... spending $3 for a trip that hardly takes you anywhere and having to walk most of the way or wait in the cold for 20 minutes for your transfer bus... I'd sure say it's indeed true: Mississauga transit is not good! I'm looking for a car for 4 months. Either buy one and sell it after 4 months or if at all possible borrow someone's car ie. rent someone's car for the term. If you know of anyone who has an extra car lying around ... let's make a deal!
3. friends
Friends are invaluable. Whoever reads this...read this: do NOT take your friends for granted. JUST DONT DO IT! I looked back on some good memorable experiences that I've had. Three places in particular: Calgary, Yellowknife, and Malawi. Then, I tried to imagine those places without the people who were there at the time and it would have been a completely different experience. It scares me to think of what it could have been like! I'm a huge huge huge extrovert, so these past 5 days of being on my own have almost killed me. Tomorrow, I am seeing friends. It's a big deal.
To end this off... I'll try and keep ya'll posted on my time in the Sauggy field of brick boxes, my encounters in the lunch room, and my quest to find a car for these next 4 months.
