Just Another Day in Paradise
So, it's Saturday! And because I'm in an office during the weekdays, Saturdays are my chance to get some good sun-time/outside-time. This movie clip is a good prelude to what I will call my 'January 26th adventure'.
There is currently a wind chill warning, where the temperature has dropped to -50 degrees Celsius . After choosing the 'insane' route of walking across the wide open lake in such winds, I decided to walk the trails home. There are many nice trails around Yellowknife. Speaking of which, I went into a store today to check out some snowshoes, and I almost walked out with a mountain bike... eep! Having to look for a new bike is very hard... you may not understand unless you're a bike person... but it just brings back so many good memories that you had with your lost bike, and all you want to do is buy the exact same bike. Unfortunately, models change.
Despite the harsh cold I had just walked through, hearing about Yellowknife's summer and talking bikes again made me want to stay in Yellowknife for the summer. No worries kids, I must return to Waterloo for school. So there will be no mountain bike races and triathlons in the NWT or marathons in Alaska this summer, perhaps next!
Okay... so back to the adventure. The reason I am calling this an 'adventure' is because it adds a positive spin to a very rough time. However at one point, I did feel like an explorer. Exploring the frontier, trudging to the promised arctic barren lands with my dog team and sled, and standing on high land ready to take on the next leg of the dangerous journey! Let me dream!
On my way back, I decided to hike the trails. The wind was still very intense and the trees didn't seem to protect me. At one point, I had lost sight of the trail and found myself trying to walk through snow that was as deep as my waist... no exaggeration. The snow was so heavy that it had lifted up my snow pants and pants... so that my bare leg was right against the snow. I was stuck. There I was, stuck in extremely deep snow. The cold of the snow against my bare legs was stinging. I couldn't move as I couldn't push through the heavy snow. My eyes were leaking from the wind, and at this point, tears were also coming and of course...freezing to my face. As I wiped my face with my mitten, the cold stiff mitt material felt like it was cutting. At one point, I thought maybe I should take a picture of this..or video document it, but taking my hands out of my mittens to handle the camera would have been a very bad idea!
I prayed that God would give me the strength to move and little by little, I finally found my way back to the trail. The entire time home, the winds continued to blow snow at your face making it impossible to see, and I couldn't help but just cry! And although I was crying, in my head I just thought 'Welcome to Yellowknife Kathleen, you are Canadian, you can handle this!'
Well, I made it home alive and didn't lose any limbs! I learnt what it was to be truly COLD and the pain that comes along with it. There is always an adventure to be had and I love it!
Peace and Love my Friends
