Week of July 5
July 6 is Malawi Republic Day. So the Eggert family, Kristina, Jonny, and I went to Liwonde National Park. This is where we had a couple of elephant 'incidences'! Kristina and I took a boat tour where we saw up to 60 elephants together, a gazillion birds, tons of hippos, crocs, and various ungulates. It was a beautiful day.
The left side of this collage are a few pictures of me helping some women dig a shallow well. We were probably about 3 metres down and had already hit water. They were thrilled that I was in there with them. I looked up above me to find the village standing around the opening of the well singing and cheering. Nothing like digging a well with a hoe barefoot wearing a chitenje (piece of material as a skirt).
The centre picture is in the village of Wasi. I met this girl named Kathleen earlier this same week but when I returned yesterday...there were so many kids I couldn't remember which girl was Kathleen. The embarrassing part is that I thought I saw her and asked to take a picture with her....yeah...turned out she wasn't Kathleen. No wonder she was so confused when we tried to ask her in our broken Chichewa "are you Kathleen?". It didnt take long for the women to find the real Kathleen and bring her towards me. We're even wearing similar colours... and I think she looks like me too! (jj as jonny would say).
Babies are EVERYWHERE! But the funny thing is ... you hardly see pregnant women. Mysterious! Anyhow, the little girl in the top right picture... she definitely peed on me. Maybe she was nervous from having an azungu hold her for the first time!
