My 23 Hour Day
August 23rd was an extremely hectic, stressful, long, but overall fun day. I woke up at 3:30 am (Eastern time) to get to the airport in Montreal on time for my 5:30 flight. I have a lot of bad words to say to the Montreal airport. Anyhow, partly my fault, partly their fault, I missed my flight and had to run around that airport to buy another ticket to catch the next flight. They made me pay a lot of money and told me that I might not catch my connecting flight in Toronto and then Calgary. And then one of my pieces of luggage was 2 kg overweight. Okay, I have to make a confession here. I knew it was probably overweight and I was hoping to pull the 'weak female' card. It worked when I tried flying home from Halifax with a suitcase full of rocks I had collected from my travels across Canada. It also worked when I moved to Yellowknife with all my winter gear... "I am moving by myself to YK for the winter and I had to pack all this winter gear IN TWO PIECES OF LUGGAGE!". And each time they've let it pass. But Montreal was not friendly. So I untape the bin and look for the heaviest and smallest thing in there: almond milk and running shoes. (Yes, I brought almond milk with me. I also brought my rice cooker. Fat kid :) ). Okay..back to the day. I madly run to security and the man was like "almond milk? miss, you cant have that. (dangit..I totally forgot..liquid). would you like to drink that?" Uh Mister, It is 5:30 in the morning and you are asking if I want to chug a litre of almond milk?" No thanks. Having to throw out the milk was more of a damper than having to deal with strange/annoying airport people.
Just as the plane was landing in Toronto, my next flight was boarding. So if you were in Pearson that day and saw a girl sprinting about 800 meters to get to the gate... that was me. It would have been an easier sprint if I were wearing my cleats...and not birks! Anyhow, I was the last one on the plane...but I made it. The exact same thing happened in Calgary. But I made it. The flight to Whitehorse was interesting. I'll leave that there. (Something strange always happens to me at airports or during flights!)
So I land in Whitehorse at 12:30 (Pacific time). I have been traveling for 10 hours and I went straight to the office. Once I arrived, I immediately started their on-boarding training. Then, Glenn (coworker) brought me to his place and had dinner. And then, we went and played 9 holes of golf with other coworkers! About golf...it was cold and rainy. I was exhausted. At hole 4, I was ready to collapse. Thankfully, my two teammates were rather entertaining...considering they drank a beer and a half for every hole we played! We had to skip the last hole since the sprinklers were about to go off.
It was a 23 hour day.
