SG at Day 10

"Can you see yourself living in Singapore?"

Yes. So far, everything is still new and exciting - so yes, I could see myself living in SG. Who wouldn't want to live in a country that is:
-clean
-safe
-surrounded by ocean
-diverse (in people, culture, food)
-rich
-innovative and advanced - moving forward, breaking new ground
-close to great travel destinations; beaches, mountains
-full of GREAT and cheap food

"Does the consumerism bother you?"

It's starting to. I'm still overwhelmed and I often have to remind myself of where I am. There are so many different enclaves of culture/food/people on such a small island. And SG is not a mediocre place - they go all out for big, flashy, shiny, different, well-kept, and overall classy. There are tons of malls and shops everywhere. But you can manage to avoid the big, shiny, busy malls if you need/want to. For example, you can get all you need in China Town in the markets, which is still busy and crazy... but it's a more natural feel for what Asia should be. I'm starting to move past being in awe and overwhelmed at everything and starting to see how people live here. Starting to discover the realities of SG. I'm starting to pay more attention to the people around me and what they're doing. Like this man pulling tiny weeds from the cracks in the road on campus. Or men in little boats trying to clean out the leaves and twigs in ponds. Or the men who sweep the grass on campus. My first thought was "Singapore - you are ridiculous. Why do you care so much about insignificant things?" What is motivating this country to be so regimented, clean, and defensive?

I have much to learn about SG. It's a very unique place. Ask these questions again at Day 30, and my answers will likely change. And hopefully by Day 30, I will have a better understanding of how and why this country functions.

Overall, having a great time exploring the city with kt and trying to avoid the monsoon rains in the afternoons!
